Hyperion Planning - Version: 1.0.0.0.00 to 4.0.2.2.00 - Release: 1.0 to 4.0

Goal

Change the admin user's password in Planning without impacting the correct functioning of the DCOM user.

Solution

In most cases, the Planning admin user will also be set up as the DCOM user. Therefore, if you update the admin user's password in Planning you also need to manually update the DCOM properties to update the password there.
This is done on the Planning server in the "Identity" tab of the DCOM properties for HsxServer and HspDataSource.
  1. Open Distributed COM Configuration Properties: Start > Run > dcomcnfg
  2. Expand Console Root > Component Services > Computers > My Computer > COM+ Applications
  3. Right-click HsxServer > Properties > Identity tab
  4. Confirm that "This user" is selected and that the user is the Planning admin. If it is not, you do not need to change anything.
  5. If the user is the Planning admin, update the password fields with the new password
  6. Click OK
  7. Repeat steps 3-6 for HspDataSource
  8. Close the DCOM configuration console.
  9. Restart the Planning server
Note that this solution can also be applicable for Planning versions 4.0.5 through 9.2.1, but only if you are using an NTLM user directory with Shared Services. Since local administrator users on the machine (like the DCOM user) will be visible in Shared Services because they are de facto members of any NTLM user directory it is possible, though unlikely, to choose the same user to be the Planning administrator and the DCOM user. For more information on the possible consequences of changing administrator passwords in later versions of Planning, see the linked note below.
